In mid 2025, Pennypop successfully ran a Media Literacy workshop at the Drogheda Institute of Further Education (DIFE), engaging media and journalism students in an immersive learning experience. The session aimed to enhance students’ understanding of today’s rapidly evolving media landscape and equip them with critical tools for analysing information, identifying bias, and creating responsible content.
The workshop covered essential topics such as fact-checking, ethical journalism, misinformation, and the role of social media in shaping public opinion. Through engaging discussions and real-world case studies, students gained valuable insights into how media operates and how to navigate it thoughtfully and ethically.
Pennypop’s team, known for its commitment to media literacy support and learning programs, emphasised the importance of critical thinking and audience awareness online. They also shared professional tips on sourcing credible information and maintaining integrity in reporting—skills vital for aspiring media professionals.
Feedback from the students was positive with several attendees commenting that it provided them with a new perspective on their responsibilities as future content creators.
DIFE’s department expressed gratitude to Pennypop for contributing to their mission of producing informed, media-savvy graduates ready to enter the industry. Events like this underline the importance of collaboration between education and media professionals in preparing students for the challenges of the digital age.
Janet Gillanders, of the institute said “The media literacy workshop (delivered by Pennypop) was an excellent educational experience for our students, covering critical skills essential for navigating today’s complex information landscape. The session opened with a comprehensive and engaging overview of media literacy, grounded in real-world examples.
The workshop structure — featuring three focused breakout sessions aligned with the key pillars of Stop, Think, and the responsibility inherent in re-sharing information — provided students with the opportunity to engage thoughtfully and analytically with each concept. Through interactive exercises and reflective discussions, students were given the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of critical evaluation and ethical media engagement.
Overall, this workshop was expertly designed and delivered, offering a perfect balance of instruction, interaction, and reflection. Our students found the workshop a highly engaging way to enhance their media literacy and critical thinking abilities.”
The workshop was a resounding success, and both Pennypop and DIFE look forward to potential future opportunities to work together.
